We’re Here for You

Hospital stays, especially for mental health, often lead to questions about next steps. Student Care Services can help with common concerns after discharge including:

  • “How do I get follow-up care?”
  • “What should I tell my professors about my absence?”
  • “Should I withdraw from the semester?”
  • “What resources are available to help me?”

We’ve created this guide to walk you through the process, explain the Baker Act (if applicable), and connect you with the support you need to successfully return to campus life.

For Students

Understanding Your Responsibilities

If you were hospitalized for mental health concerns, UCF has specific procedures in place to support your wellbeing. According to the Golden Rule (5.006, Section 4b), students identified as threatening self-harm or attempting suicide must complete a mandated assessment with a licensed mental health professional.

This assessment can be completed with:

  • A UCF Student Health Services psychiatrist
  • A UCF Counseling and Psychological Services clinician
  • A community-based counselor or psychiatrist of your choice
Helpful Tip: If you already have an appointment scheduled with a mental health provider before your meeting with Student Care Services, you can download our Off-Campus Mandated Assessment Form and bring it to your appointment.

After Hospital Release

When you’re discharged, you’ll likely already have follow-up appointments scheduled with counselors or psychiatrists. Student Care Services works closely with many Baker Act facilities in Central Florida, so check your discharge paperwork carefully.

You should also check your Knights Email for an appointment with a Student Care Services Care Manager. If you don’t see an appointment or need to reschedule, just call us at (407) 823-5607—we’re happy to help!

What to Expect at Your Student Care Services Appointment

When you visit us:

  1. Arrive 15 minutes early to complete a brief intake form
  2. Meet with your Care Coordinator to discuss your hospitalization experience
  3. Ask questions about follow-up appointments and connecting to resources
  4. Review the Mandated Assessment process and receive guidance on completing it
  5. Schedule a follow-up appointment to ensure you’re getting the support you need

What About Missed Classes?

If you missed classes during your hospitalization, we can help you request a Class Absence Notice. These formal notifications alert your professors about your absence, though you’ll still need to work with each instructor individually to catch up on missed work.

To request a notice, just mention it to your Care Manager or use our Class Absence Notice form.

Considering Medical Withdrawal?

If you’re thinking about taking a medical withdrawal from the semester, your Care Manager can guide you through the process. Medical withdrawals are overseen by Student Academic Services—visit our Medical Withdrawal Information page to learn more.

For Families and Supporters

We understand how difficult it can be when someone you care about is hospitalized. While we can’t discuss specific student information due to FERPA privacy laws, we can:

  • Explain general processes and policies
  • Discuss available resources
  • Answer questions about the Baker Act process

If your student would like us to speak with you directly, they can sign a release form allowing us to do so. We welcome family involvement in the recovery and support process!
